What's new in the Opus 2 compared to the original Opus?

Opus 2 is a significant step up from Opus 1. It features larger 48mm conical burrs (vs. 40mm in Opus 1), a faster grind speed (about 9 seconds for an espresso shot), and an upgraded ionizer for better anti-static performance. We also simplified the grind adjustment system with a stepless adjustment dial and included two dedicated catch cups: one for brewed coffee and one for espresso.

Can I use the Opus 2 for espresso?

Yes. The Opus 2 is designed to handle the full range, from espresso to cold brew. It includes an espresso dosing cup compatible with both 54mm and 58mm portafilters, and its 48mm conical burrs are engineered for the fine, consistent grind espresso requires.

What grind setting should I start with for espresso?

The grind guide printed on the Opus 2 lid is a starting point, not a rule. Most espresso dials in around settings 0–2, but your ideal setting depends on your machine, basket type, bean freshness, and roast level. Pressurized baskets typically need a coarser grind; 58mm baskets generally need a finer grind than 54mm. Expect a little experimentation. That's normal.

Should I get the Opus 2 or the Ode 2?

It depends on how you brew. The Ode Gen 2 is purpose-built for filter coffee (pour-over, drip, French press) and uses 64mm flat burrs for exceptional consistency, but it doesn't grind for espresso. The Opus 2 handles everything, including espresso, at a lower price point. If you pull shots of espresso at home, the Opus 2 is the right call. 

What brew methods does the Opus 2 support?

All of them. Espresso, pour-over, drip, AeroPress, French press, cold brew. The Opus 2's 48 adjustable settings cover the full grind range. Built-in grind size guidance on the lid makes it easy to find your starting point for any method.

Is the Opus 2 compatible with my portafilter?

The included espresso catch cup fits both 54mm and 58mm portafilters and snaps into place for a clean, mess-free transfer.
